October: ‘Creepin’ it real and feeling ‘sew’ thankful!
October must be my favorite month of the year. I grew up in Manhattan, New York; therefore, October for me meant perfect weather, enjoying trees of every shade of green and orange and the beginning of wearing layers to stay warm. Of course, Halloween was another reason I loved the month growing up, although I was not able to take part in the holiday due to religious reasons. This still did not stop me from enjoying the myriad of creepy costumes, spooky décor, and Halloween music......yes, I still listen to Monster Mash!! I loved Halloween so much that when I was a preteen, I snuck a homemade costume to school for a Halloween party that was going to take place. From my closet I pulled a long skirt and top, from my mom I grabbed one of her many silky scarves and a pair of my sister’s biggest hoop earrings and a stick of blackest black eyeliner. A gypsy was the best I could come up with allowing me to “fit in” with the rest of the students, which was always so difficult for me. By the way, when I got home my mother knew what I had done and was waiting for me by the door. LOL. The Big Apple will always hold a special place in my heart since it was the place of my birth, it holds the streets that I walked to school, to church, the neighborhood park, and the many street fairs I enjoyed. It also harbored my love for fashion, people watching and my imagination.
A lot of the time, the things I do now, reflect the things I wanted to do as a teen and young adult and just didn’t have the opportunity. Although I am not a fashion designer, I design the patterns for each of my dolls and their clothing. I imagine every item and stitch every stitch. I experiment with different looks, fabric, yarn and makeup for each doll I make. The influence of the big city I grew up in, the encouragement and love I have always had from my family and friends is all intertwined in everything I create! There is much love, wonder, magic and creativity in everything that is fabricated in my little home studio.
For October 2021, I decided to make two Witch inspired dolls, Evanora and Magnolia. Together they took about two weeks to create. Every little detail is thought out from their cute pointy witch hats made of their own yarn hair, “witchy” charms used to embellish their little outfits and the daintiest black boots a witch could ever wish to own. Each doll will travel to their forever homes with a tiny handmade witch broom. Magnolia and Evanora will be available tomorrow, October 3rd at 1pm EST!
What’s next? Unless I get the itch for more witches, I believe my yoga dolls are next in my line up of dolls to create. I am looking forward to these intricate dolls with their wire skeletons. The best way to keep up to date on doll collections being added to my website, is by subscribing to my newsletter. I am always “sew” very thankful for you all!
